iFeature | OBI-WAN KENOBI Brings the Force in Disney+ Limited Series

A hidden chapter from the saga of a galaxy far, far away is finally revealed in the Disney+ Limited Series OBI-WAN KENOBI which reunites fans with one of the greatest of the Jedi who is now a fugitive hunted by a growing Empire!

The Force is strong with Star Wars fans. Television Entertainment is in the throes of a rebellion! With streaming services taking the lead on viewing engagements and drawing the water away from network prospects, the ante continues to rise and is none more evident than on Disney+. Since arriving on the scene the service has landed the hits with the most profitable entertainment franchises in media ranging from a catalog in the vault of Disney animated classics and contemporaries to becoming the home of Marvel Studios’ cinematic continuum.

The other franchise in the mix at Disney+ that makes it a force to be reconned with is its perpetuation of the Star Wars saga. After purchasing the property from its creator George Lucas and under the mindful eye of executive Kathleen Kennedy, Disney was poised to capitalize on the galaxy far away, here and now, and immediately set out to grow the empire. It started with the continuation of the theatrical legacy, with 2015s Star Wars: Episode XII – The Force Awakens before turning up the volume on the first of a series of adventures for the small screen that launched Disney+ into warp speed.

When Disney+ launched on November 12, 2019, it came out swinging with The Mandalorian an original adventure set in the Star Wars universe featuring a gun-slinger and his ward. The series would draw critical acclaim as well as win the hearts of fans and has since opened up a Pandora’s Box into George Lucas’ world that has continued to grow. This month debuts a return to the legacy that is far more familiar to fans of the saga across multiple generations, as the long-awaited Obi-Wan Kenobi Limited Series starring Ewan McGregor explores the story lost to the dunes of a planet with twin suns.

The series had been promised and was once on track to appear in theaters but with the success of the aforementioned The Mandalorian and the inevitable intrigue brought on by its follow-up The Book of Boba Fett which centered on the return of one of the galaxy’s most notorious bounty hunters, in order to do justice by the story, the team at Lucasfilm, decided the Limited-Series format would give the filmmakers an opportunity to breathe into an era in the once-proud Jedi’s life, as he carefully keeps watch from a distance of certain Young Skywalker while avoiding detection from the evil Empire.

Before the Dark Times

The limited series marks the return of a “legacy actor” McGregor to the franchise, who portrayed the role of a younger Jedi Knight in his prime in George Lucas’ Prequel Series, inheriting it from Sir Alec Guinness, the legendary actor who originated the role in the Original Trilogy. Far from anyone’s expectations, Obi-Wan Kenobi literally feels the most as a continuation, an extension of Lucas’ vision, and when the story begins it is set 10 years after the consequential events of Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005) after Kenobi exiles himself and the Jedi are all but extinct.

Seeking a life guaranteed complete anonymity, he seeks shelter on the Outer Rim world of Tatooine, keeping a watchful eye on one of Anakin Skywalker’s twin children, the boy, Luke whom Obi-Wan has resigned to the care of his Uncle Owen Lars (Joel Edgerton) and his wife. Lars is not entirely keen on “Old Ben” Kenobi stalking about, especially when agents of the Empire, Jedi hunters who call themselves Inquisitors arrive on the planet. They are hunters on a mission to eradicate any remnant of the Jedi. One in particular among them, Reva (Moses Ingram) is determined to bring Kenobi in!

These agents of evil were of course first introduced as sinister adversaries chasing after the crew of The Ghost in the animated series Star Wars: Rebels. We learn that they are force-wielders who were either one-time Padawan trainees or sensitives specifically picked by Darth Vader to search out the galaxy for any remaining Jedi and murder them in service of The Emperor and the Galactic Empire. Reprising his role, and appearing fully invested in the armor that comes with the menace of the Dark Lord of the Sith is Hayden Christensen who portrayed Anakin Skywalker.

With the arrival of Obi-Wan Kenobi on Disney+ the subscriber service has also guaranteed that The Force is indeed strong with it, announcing the addition of Andor (starring Rogue One veteran Diego Luna) and Ahsoka premiering in 2023 continuing the live-action adventures of The Clone War legend with Rosario Dawson stepping into the spotlight and out from the shadow of The Mandalorian which will be returning for Season Three in 2022. The advent of these live-action narratives will undoubtedly appeal to fans of the growing Star Wars mythology which is showing no signs of creative fatigue.
