The X-Men’s Universe is about to get very dark! 20th Century Fox has released its first trailer for the upcoming next installment of their highly successor X-Men films franchise. The highly provocative “first look” at The New Mutants sets up some very sinister implications of a world that not only fears and hunts the extraordinarily gifted among them, but exists to frighten them most into submission!
Here is a look at the trailer:
The film directed by Josh Boone is an adaptation of the premiere spin-off of the Marvel Comics comic book The Uncanny X-Men which expanded the world of the imprints most popular characters at the time by including a “new generation” of untrained young people who were also gathered together by Professor Charles Xavier, the X-Men’s mentor and founder. The series was written by Chris Claremont who is responsible for the X-Men’s best-selling run.
Among the familiar faces appearing in the film which will be released in 2018, Game of Thrones fans will recognize Maisie Williams who will embody (most appropriately) the role of Rahne Sinclair, the ferrel beauty known as Wolfsbane. In the book, Rahne is the most obvious link between the two team, being the niece of Dr. Moira MacTaggert, a colleague of Professor X’s who is played by actress Rose Byrne in the films.
Other familiar “New Mutants” that will be appearing in the film include Cannonball, Mirage, Sunspot and Magik, the younger sister of the X-Men known as Colossus. The New Mutants is released through 20th Century Fox and will be released in theaters in 2018.
He’s been “amazing” and “spectacular” but Peter Parker — the SPIDER-MAN has never had a HOMECOMING like this! However will the web-slinger stand on his own after joining the CIVIL WAR?
Of any other superhero in film, with the exception of perhaps the Batman, everyone’s favorite web-slinger Spider-Man has proven blockbuster gold for Sony Pictures, a fact not lost on the studio who only recently loosened its noose on the Marvel Comics character allowing him to join the Marvel Films cinematic universe! It’s quite appropriate then that the hero’s next silver screen outing has secured as its title Spider-Man: Homecoming since the last time we saw Spidey he was taking on some pretty heavy guns in Captain America: Civil War.
Stepping into the very famous spandex will be Tom Holland who did a pretty good job of going toe-to-toe alongside Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.) against his longtime Avengers teammate Captain America (Chris Evans) when that group of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes found themselves on opposite sides of the issue. It’s fair to say that young Peter Parker got himself caught up in the middle of the beef when his hero, industrialist Tony Stark (Downey, Jr.) persuades the high schooler to fight for his side!
Back In The Swing of Things
We’re about to find out whether or not that was a good decision on Peter’s part, after all, he’s got to come back home to New York City and pick things up where he left off. Directed by Jon Watts this Spider-Man feature is promising to borrow less from its five predecessors, and set up its own web of intrigue. For starters, it will assume that everyone is already invested in our friendly neighborhood amazing Spider-Man and his origin will not be a primary play of the narrative that ensues. We all get it — Peter Parker (Holland) is bit by a radioactive spider, etc.
The film’s arc will apparently pick up shortly after Peter returns from his escapade helping Tony take down Cap and his crew. An eager Mr. Parker is now eager to prove he’s got what it takes to join the ranks of the mighty Avengers, but he’s got homework and high school to think about first. That’s right, Peter is back in high school and this 15-year old is trying to balance term papers and fighting crime. Then there’s the appearance of the Vulture, played by Michael Keaton. Everything starts to unravel for Peter when this hi-tech avian hitman moves in on his territory.
Spider-Man: Homecoming will mark the first appearance of the Vulture, one of the classic villains in the character’s rogues gallery. Adrian Toomes first plague our hero’s existence in the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man #1 published by Marvel Comics in 1963. Toomes is depicted as a brilliant inventor who scavenges technology from the Avengers first battle against the alien forces that rained down on New York City in Marvel’s Avengers. Envious of Tony Stark, Toomes has decided to outwit Iron Man and instead will find himself facing off against the two heroes.
Already Spider-Man: Homecoming is winning over fans especially of the established Marvel Films cinematic universe who have been looking forward to seeing this character join the rest of the line-up. With the Avengers: Infinity War promising to deal a dark hand to some of the long-standing heroes that have been apart of this universe (including Agents of SHIELD and Netflix’s Defenders cast) Peter better be careful what he wishes for. Spider-Man has been already been confirmed to play his part in that storyline which will bring everyone together to battle Thanos.
Spider-Man: Homecomingopens in theaters nationwide on July 7 and is distributed by Sony Pictures in collaboration with Marvel Films.
With the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 proving its box office muscle, the MARVEL Films Cinematic Universe is about to go cosmic with AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR the ultimate crossover film in production!
The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2have only just begun their global take over of the theatrical box-office with a winning $145 million opening weekend kicking off the Summer Blockbuster season into the upper stratosphere. Marvel Films’ Guardians now stands to be the movie to beat, with heavy-hitting competition hot on its heels including the solo premiere of Wonder Woman from the competitive studio Warner Bros. and the next episode in Ridley Scott’s space adventure Alien: Covenant.
Though Guardians and its cast are basking in the accolades of largely positive reviews, Marvel Films is hard at work already raising the stakes with the next phase of their growing cinematic empire. Entertainment news outlets have starting spreading the good cheer that Avengers: Infinity War is in production! Directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo after the two-time director of the franchise Joss Whedon passed the baton, this latest epic will be unlike any previous release from the studio in that it will feature every character in their cannon so far!
Infinity War will be released in two parts with the first hitting theaters on
May 4, 2018 and the storyline will tie-up most of the current wave of Marvel Films loose narratives that have interconnected them leading up a climatic battle with the indomitable might of the villainous Thanos. The classic Marvel Comics villain who is part of an alien race of eternals and has long sought to control life and death itself through the power that courses from the fabled Infinity Stones. The stones have played a centrifugal a part in many of the films to date.
Significantly, one of the last stones is currently embedded in the newest member of the Avengers! The Vision (played by Paul Bentley) assumed protection of one of the stones at the conclusion of the last film Avengers: Age of Ultron and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) has recommended that it remain in the synthezoid’s care. But as we have come to learn Thanos is putting together his Infinity gauntlet and once complete, it will make him the most powerful being in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — including the urban street fighters of the Netflix realm and the agents on ABC.
Reports from the set currently shooting outside the US, after securing some footage in Atlanta that included among the cast Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) and Tom Holland (the new Spider-Man), have Hemsworth’s Thor in a scene that is first eluded to in a flashback memory from Age of Ultron that includes a statue of a warrior with a sword in hand suggesting a “falling in battle”. In that scene it is clear that Thor will leading Asgard toward a confrontation with Hel (which has been also eluded to as a plot point in the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok) but will there be casualties?
The story is still unfolding and we won’t know for certain until Infinity War comes to theaters, but in one of the most unique cinematic experiences the Marvel Films are lining up for one of its most truly blockbuster moments yet!
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 from Marvel Films is in theaters now!
The Mighty God of Thunder goes missing during the last major big-screen brawl between his teammates in the Avengers, but there’s a really good reason why this big gun sat our the Civil War, and Entertainment Weekly has got it covered in its exclusive look at THOR: RAGNAROK!
Imagine how Marvel Films’ Captain America: Civil War would have ended up had the Thunder God, Thor and the Green Goliath, Hulk been asked to pick a side. The entire melee would have ended in under 2 minutes with a slam dunk in favor of whomever decidedly courted either one of these powerhouses. Fortunately for everyone involved, it didn’t have to come to that, but it did leave fans wondering about the whereabouts of these two titans. The question behind that missing time is about to get answered when Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters in November.
For the third chapter in the continuing adventures of Thor starring Chris Hemsworth expect plenty of fresh faces and major changes! Entertainment Weekly put the flick still in production on its cover this week and gave fans their first looks at Kate Blanchett as Hela Goddess of Death, who unleashes chaos on the denizens of Asgard including Thor and his wicked half-brother Loki played once again by Tom Hiddleston. At the climax of the last film, the God of Mischief had assumed the mantle of King of Asgard, impersonating a now missing Odin.
Presumably Anthony Hopkins will return in the role of the mighty High-Father, after all, Thor has enlisted the help of Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme Doctor Strange (yes, Benedict Cumberbatch) to assist him in the quest to locate the missing as seen in the stinger at the end of Strange’s own film. Though the title would suggest an end-of-days motif, Ragnarok will largely center on a vision quest of sorts for Thor who is seeking answers to the mystery surrounding the forces that may be manipulating the fates of his friends on Earth.
Thor’s journey takes him across several worlds and universes, eventually landing him on the planet Sakaar and in the grips of the Grand Master played by Jeff Goldblum who presides over an intergalactic arena. It’s there that Thor runs into his teammate Hulk (Mark Ruffalo returns in the role) and at the whim of the Grand Master, the two Avengers will come to blows! Directed by Taika Waititi Thor: Ragnarok is a departure from the normal superhero franchise film, as it promises to take full advantage of Hemsworth’s comedic charisma!

It may be this X-Men’s final fight as HUGH JACKMAN returns to the big screen in the third solo feature starring the clawed loner in LOGAN! How will audience manage to get along without Wolverine?
All good things must come to an end, even an adamantium-laced mutant with a healing factor that’s kept him looking like Hugh Jackman for close to two decades (while the character itself is arguably about 150 years old)! After appearing as the mysterious Wolverine in 9 films, Jackman is readying for a big send off in Logan the third solo film centering on the most popular member on the X-Men’s roster.
Part of the Marvel Comics franchise, Wolverine was first introduced to readers in an arc that concluded in The Incredible Hulk #181 (Nov. 1974) in a classic brawl with the green Goliath. Soon Wolverine would return in a very big way when he revived the mutant line-up in Giant Size X-Men #1 which was released in 1975. Since then Wolverine has become a centrifugal part of that group’s changing dynamic, and played an important role in the live-action, 2000 X-Men feature.
Jackman was not the original actor cast in the role. The part had been awarded to Dougray Scott, but due to a scheduling conflict, he was unable to fulfill his commitment to the X-Men project and the “second favorite” Jackman was immediately called to set to join the team. The rest is literally as they say “history”! The role of the amnesiac wild man turned heroic adventurer turned Hugh Jackman into a star, and he’s played the part consistently for the last 17 years.
Even now as box-office records are being set Logan came in #1 in its opening weekend and grossed $85.3 million in its domestic debut. After calculating its $152.5 million from oversees ticket sales, the film took in $237.8 million worldwide, solidifying its audience, even though the superhero flick had earned a R-rating — a dubious distinction for a comic book adaptation, but not unrealistic after Deadpool made a killing in ticket sales as well.

In 2009 I interviewed Hugh Jackman and the rest of the cast including Ryan Reynolds about the first solo run for his mutant hero in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Check out the video here:
It’s WAR! Captain America takes on Iron Man in the next episode in Marvel Films cinematic universe…and he’s bringing along some friends.
It’s hard to imagine discord in the Marvel Comics universe but one of the publishing giant’s greatest moments came with the crossover event “Civil War” which pitted Avengers and allies; on one side the forces of Captain America facing the corporate might of the United States government and Iron Man.
Although both had the best of intentions, Cap and Tony found themselves at odds over the government implementing a mandate that any and all super-powered individuals be registered with the government, and by order serve when called upon. Captain America believed this action to be an infringement on the individuals civil rights, while Iron Man was convinced it was every hero’s social responsibility.
The epic saga played out over several months in 2006 and into 2007 under the watchful creative arc of writer Mark Millar. The series also had repercussions throughout the Marvel Universe, and played out in practically every one of its monthly publications — especially profound was the impact on Spider-Man as Peter Parker found himself revealing his secret identity publicly at Iron Man’s insistence, but when a battle with Captain America’s resistance force ends in a major casualty, Parker switches sides.
The storyline resulted in several “Avengers Initiatives” afterwards, until Captain America finally resurfaces to oppose a rogue nation.
Iron Man and Captain America ultimately must but their differences aside when they discover the truth in their folly. As Avenger battled Avenger, the villainous Norman Osborn inserted himself into world affairs and ultimately places every major super villain in a position of power!
This confrontation eventually plays out, and the Marvel Universe has never been the same, and now the battle will play out on the big screen when the Captain America: Civil War the third in the series of solo films featuring the “First Avenger”, but how will fans react when Cap faces off against his fellow Avenger Tony Stark. If the just released trailer is any indications…sparks will fly!
