After the Amazing Amazon finally makes her big screen debut this summer, many will ask why did it take so long for DC Comics WONDER WOMAN to get the attention she so rightly deserves!
It’s incredible to imagine that it’s taken 76 years since her conception for Wonder Woman to make it to the big-screen in a solo adventure of her own, but pretty soon (June 2 as a matter of fact) the Amazon Princess will finally emerge out from under of the shadow of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and step into the spotlight! And it’s about time!
The latest cover of Entertainment Weekly has placed Gal Gadot the modern day embodiment of the DC Comics legend front and center, and the set piece of the issue is a story by Nicole Sperling who spoke with Patty Jenkins the director who inherited the reigns of the blockbuster feature. Jenkins explains her connection to the character and what it has meant to her to bring Wonder Woman’s origin story to theaters.
The film stars Gadot as Diana the Princess of the Amazons, a tribe of warrior women who live outside of the realm of “Man’s World”, but when one lands on their shores (co-star Chris Pine as Steve Trevor) and brings war to paradise, Diana is compelled to fulfill her destiny to become the most integral part of the DC Comics pantheon and a founding member of the Justice League — Wonder Woman!
Her journey to the big screen didn’t come without its own set of hurdles, but Wonder Woman is already proving she’s got what it takes with advanced word on the film incredibly favorable. Some critics have gone on the record saying that Wonder Woman will be the “best DC Comics movie so far!” After the lukewarm reception that both BvS and its follow-up Suicide Squad received by fans and critics alike, this is a good sign especially as the cinematic DC Comics Universe launches!
The article takes a close and detailed look at Wonder Woman throughout her 76 year history and how she’s evolved with every generation as an icon and symbol not only for feminism, but for all people!
Read the full article in this week’s Issue of Entertainment Weekly available on stands now and digital download, and Wonder Woman hits theaters this weekend on June 2.
With the climatic ending of last summer’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice having the Man of Steel sacrificing himself in final combat against Lex Luthor’s menacing “Doomsday” monster, the idea of a Justice League big screen effort without Superman (Henry Cavill) was looking pretty grim!
Until today when the latest teaser poster finally included Superman in all his glory alongside the Batman and Wonder Woman, and the rest of the new recruits including Aquaman, The Flash and Cyborg to finally (nearly) deliver on the entire roster of founding members.
There are some additional details leaking about the upcoming film that promise that a certain seventh leaguer may make a dubious appearance alongside this core group of six — of course, fans are anticipating that Green Lantern will be introduced to reveal the core, founding members.
Regardless, it is a great sign that Superman has been added finally to the latest poster art. The Last Son of Krypton and the tentpole character boy which the cinematic DC Comics universe was introduced, will undoubtedly play into the main plot that is lining up closely with the storyline in the “Origin” graphic novel which collects the first arc of the Justice League when introduced at the launch of “The New 52” reboot.
With so much riding on and the growing anticipation for one of this summer’s most films, WB and DC Entertainment is banking that Wonder Woman will be on everyone’s mind. So to get fans ready for the arrival of the Amazing Amazon on the big screen (not once, but twice in 2017) on Saturday, May 6 otherwise known nationally as Free Comic Book Day retailers will be filling bags with these offerings from DC Comics.
Special “Free Comic Book Day” Editions of Wonder Woman’s early year as a super heroine is explored in the Wonder Woman Special Edition #1 by Greg Rucka and for the young reader DC Super Hero Girls #1 features a chapter from the graphic novel “Summer Olympus”. Don’t miss out on these wonderful adventures on “Free Comic Book Day”.
The latest release from the DC Collectibles DC Comics ICONS line of action figures introduce a milestone with STATIC leading the charge!
Of any action figures currently on the market, DC Collectibles have taken great care to insure that if they’re going to own their brand and design and release product to this audience, it’s going to make certain that with every new addition, they’ve got something interesting to offer fans.
The high-end line of DC Comics ICONS figures promised from its launch that with every cycle they would explore “iconic” versions of the heroes and villains inside the DC publishing continuity, though they’ve just ventured further into the multiverse and crossing imprints with the issue of a Milestone Comics favorite – Static!
The electrically charged metahuman protects the city of Dakota while attending high school in his true identity of Virgil Hawkins. The figure is styled in the skin-tight body suit that the character wears in his later issues, including the baseball cap. At 6″ Static looks quite dynamic and can be posed wildly upon his favorite mode of transportation: a man hole cover.
Of most contemporary “Modern Age” superheroes Static has always been a fan favorite that has transcended mediums and even appeared in his cartoon series that worked itself into the Justice League Unlimited continuity. Static survived the “FlashPoint” reboot and appeared as a provisional member of Red Robin’s Teen Titans.
There are two versions of the DC ICONS Static action figure (#17 in the line) the “standard” release and a “deluxe” with alternate hands and his signature yellow trench coat.
Also hitting shelves is the most famous elemental in the DC Universe, Swamp Thing joins the ranks of the DC ICONS line as #18 and is sculpted as he appeared in the Swamp Thing comics arc “Dark Genesis”. The figure appropriately stands a head above most of the other figures and is expertly detailed, and comes packed with Un-Man.
These latest additions to the DC Collectibles DC Comics ICONS action figures have been released in tandem with the Justice League “Rebirth” 7-figure set, and are available in specialty shops everywhere.
Two of the greatest creators in comics are profiled in a bonus feature appearing in the DC Universe Original Movie TEEN TITANS: THE JUDAS CONTRACT — an arc from the 80’s by MARV WOLFMAN and GEORGE PÉREZ.
With the release of the feature length animated DC Universe Original Movie Teen Titans: The Judas Contract one of the greatest story arcs ever explored comes to life — continuing to evolve the continuity of these popular flicks that have adapted several other milestones from DC Comics. Yet no other storyline ever captured the imagination of its readership like “The Judas Contract” which ran during the 1980’s in Tales of the Teen Titans and concluded in Tales of the Teen Titans Annual #3.
The creators of those books Marv Wolfman and George Pérez are very affectionately and appropriately profiled in a special bonus featurette bundled in with the release of the film entitled “Titanic Minds: Reuniting Wolfman and Pérez— the nearly 30-minute discussions examines the pair’s contribution to comics including Teen Titans, and how they came to become two of the most influential creators in comics. The interview reveals wonderful insight to their relationship and their creative process.
The two lived only blocks apart when they started would on The New Teen Titans and neither had any idea that the book would become a sensation. Wolfman and Pérez not only turned the Teen Titans into one of DC’s most popular books, but would eventually collaborate on arguably the most important book series ever published Crisis on Infinite Earths which rebooted and realigned the entire DC Universe continuity at its 50 year publishing history. The creators reveal how they broke into comics and continued on their winning streak!
Among some of the greatest moments captured during the revelatory interview is the behind-the-scenes leading up to very popular and highly controversial arc for “The Judas Contract” which gave comics fans the first appearance of Nightwing, the origin of Deathstroke the Terminator, Jericho and the most diabolical character ever designed by the pair and the star of “The Judas Contract” Terra.
Teen Titans: The Judas Contractis available now on Digital HD and will be available on Blu-ray and DVD soon.
Two of the most popular creatives in DC Comics, BATMAN’s Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo return for the highly anticipated event DARK NIGHTS: METAL that will separate the true super powers in the DCU from the wimps!
This current industry wide publishing “reboot” has truly lived up to its name! With “Rebirth” DC Comics has returned to telling stories with their core characters that emphasize the importance of the legacy our favorite characters have trail-blazed throughout their more than 75 year history. The last reboot, 2011’s “The New 52” dramatically retooled most of the pantheon and the extensive continuity, and mostly left diehard fans in the dark.
Now with nearly a year of “Rebirth” continuity effectively and positively pulling a much appreciated retcon of “The New 52” effect, the heroes — including all the major players — are returning to form, but as everyone knows as with every good drama — it’s always darkest, before the light! The comics industry, parrying the film industry in many ways, has relied on creating its own “blockbuster” story arcs, and this season DC will be taking its heroes into a Dark Nights.
There aren’t very many details released yet about the upcoming Dark Night event except that it will affect all the major players in the DC Comics Universe in a very dramatic way. Comic book greats Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo will be reuniting for the Dark Nights: Metal arc which the pair have suggested to in stories appearing in Batman during their very inspiring collaboration on the Dark Knight’s title. Metal will be taking our heroes to some very “dark” places.
Snyder said in a recent press release, “I’ve been planning Metal for as long as I’ve been writing Batman, but this is bigger than Batman.” The pair have been leaving clues that
go all the way back to their arc that introduced the Court of Owls, and continued through their stories that pitted the Caped Crusader against his most infamous adversary the Joker. “Our biggest hints in the run culminated with Batman #50, and now we’re back to tell a story that breaks everything apart.”
The pair have suggested that Dark Nights: Metal will be the definitive project of their careers, but as fans of their work on Batman hope it will not be the last time that these two work together. “I’m looking forward to rock’n’ and roll’n’ together again,” Capullo admitted. “Fans have been loud and clear – they want more from us. We’re primed and ready to blow it up!” Building on the foundation they’ve worked on, the expectations for Dark Nights: Metal couldn’t be greater!
Dark Nights: Metal will be terrifying the thrills out of readers beginning in August of 2017.
