DC Comics REBIRTH :: The Plot Deepens

DC Comics continues to evolve during its latest “Rebirth”! Entering into a second act with a mystery for its greatest detectives to solve!

DC’s Universe — all great and small — are in for a serious shake-up as the events of the imprint wide rebrand “Rebirth” enter now into a very critical second act.

Fans have been patiently anticipating the outcome of DC Comics most recent publishing rebrand an event entitled “Rebirth”. After much of the 2011 “The New 52” reboot which renumbered and retooled (not to mention retconned) much of the imprint’s more than 75 year established mythology and retrofitted most of the major character’s origins to appeal to millennial readers, the attempt at attracting younger readers left most diehard devotees in the dark!

After the time-twisting “FlashPoint” storyline which is considered the epicenter crisis that through everything for a loop and reignited the timeline, many faithful long-time readers discovered that the Flash/Barry Allen’s reckless abuse of the speed force, the energy band that gives him control over time and space caused a major backlash that rewrote history and erased some very important people from history.

For nearly all the time that the heroes have been working themselves through the current Earth-0 timeline (the Prime-Earth in the DC Comics Multiverse) someone had been missing from existence, someone significantly important to the post-Crisis universe. DC Universe: Rebirth written by Geoff Johns reintroduced Wally West, the one-time Kid Flash who succeeded Barry Allen as the Flash and who we learned had been trapped in a nexus between time and space.

Wally had been trying to reconnect with the “real world” but there were other elements at work, someone else was closely watching these events as they took place — and that someone had interfered in the Prime-Earth continuity. By the time Wally escapes from his captivity, he enters into a world that doesn’t remember who he is and also learns that a significant amount of time (10 years) has been stolen!

Now reunited with his former teammates in the Titans Wally is working to collect the pieces of his life. In the most recent issue of Titans #7 while has a meeting with Superman, who is himself a displaced version of his former self who existed before the events of the “FlashPoint” and was trapped on the patchwork world of Telos during “Convergence”. The mystery of who has tampered with the time stream is about to start taking shape…

In the upcoming April issues of Batman and The Flash a four-part arc entitled “The Button” will begin to put readers on the path to the climatic reveal of the story behind that smiley face button that Batman found imbedded in his Batcave wall. The two greatest detectives in the DC Universe, will be teaming up in issues #21 and #22 of the respective titles with a story by Tom King and Joshua Williamson, with art by Jason Fabok and Howard Porter.

Given the speed at which the “Rebirth” storyline is progressing and the considerable importance of factoring in the characters from Alan Moore and Dave Gibbon’s iconic Watchman graphic novel into the equation, after “Rebirth” arrives at its conclusion it is safe to say…the DC multiverse may never be the same again!

“The Button” the next arc leading to the inevitable climax will debut in April and May and will also be released in special lenticular covers by Jason Fabok.

Star Trek 50 Years Later…More to Discovery

As one of the greatest science fiction franchises celebrates a landmark, more details surface about the latest installment.

That’s one small step… The words are legendary. Spoken by astronaut Neil Armstrong upon his famous lunar march across the landscape of our very own moon. It was one of America’s and our space programs proudest moments and would herald in the “Space Age”. The Apollo 11 mission would inspire generations of us to look to the stars and imagine all sorts of possibilities. Among them most — what more is out there.

That spirit of exploration was the clear foundation for an aspiring and ambition screenplay writer Gene Roddenberry envisioned a future — a wagon train to the stars — where mankind has taken to the stars to seek out new life, and new civilizations. Roddenberry gave birth to a new kind of television series, a phenomenon really and 50 years later Star Trek would still endure.

After the syndication success of The Original Series the franchise would continue in films, before returning to television for The Next Generation and so on. The original cast was reimagined in 2009 continuing the voyages of perhaps the most famous starship in popular culture. The Starship Enterprise would become one of the most iconic images in television history.

50 years later the franchise welcomes a new motion picture. Star Trek Beyond the third to feature the rebooted crew patterned after The Original Series and soon Star Trek will return to television when CBS prepares to launch an entirely new adventure and fans eagerly anticipate the launch of Star Trek Discovery the fifth spin-off series and the first in more than a decade.

The project is in the capable hands of Bryan Fuller who was handed the reigns to head the new Star Trek for CBS and will be exclusively airing on the network’s “All Access” pay service (as well as Netflix) after the first episode premieres on the network in 2017. An enticing “first look” teaser trailer was unveiled at SDCC this year, and just recently Fuller has given out some additional details about Discovery and its mission.

The series will be set chronologically 10 years before The Original Series which would insinuate that the events of Star Trek (2009) the reboot may not “obviously” play into the plot, although it has been suggested that original cast characters may appear on Discovery. The show will also have a 13 episode first season run and the stories will be serialized, and not necessarily stand alone episodes.

Fuller has said that the entire series will play a novel and each episode an encapsulated chapter, with a beginning, middle and an end, that connects to the overall thread. The main character of the show will be female, but not the captain of the ship. The story will focus on her journey and growth, supported from her perspective and not the captain’s seat.

Elements of the established Trek mythology will weave their way into Discovery including Section 31, the clandestine shadow organization that is part of the Federation. There will be a centrifugal event from Trek history that will be revisited and will serve as the backdrop for the drama. Expect for some other familiar faces from Trek lore to show their faces and be a significant part of the story.

The ship herself is based on a design by legendary artist Ralph McQuarrie who had introduced designs when Paramount first decided to resurrect Star Trek for its Phase II which eventually evolved into Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Fuller describes the ship’s design as something that is still in development, so the version seen in the teaser may not be the final that will eventually appear when the show premieres in January 2017.

The cast is currently being cast and will also feature a gay regular character, as well as more dramatic alien races than ever seen before, although some established favorites will be integrated into the story.

We’ll be closely following more details about Star Trek Discovery as they come to light.

Supermen Clash in Action Comics #52!

NEWSHEADER-TRIN04_640x200_Feb2.3.jpg

It’s the “Final Days of Superman” and all the Supermen are getting in on the ACTION!

Superman is dying! In the final arc encompassing all of the DC Comics Superman titles entitled “The Final Days of Superman” the Man of Steel has discovered that he is indeed vulnerable. After having faced the threat of the alien Rao, the immortal Vandal Savage and fired himself up in the unholy furnaces of Darkseid’s Apokolips, Superman has begun to deteriorate — his body succumbing to the various stresses he’s put upon himself.

Going through the efforts of cleaning house, making certain that his adopted home world will be properly protected after he’s gone, Superman is joined by his two closest confidants and friends. Both Batman and Wonder Woman have rallied alongside Superman to help him on his quest, and perhaps uncover the true identity of the super-powered imposter that’s walking around, bright as the sun, looking to replace him.

Several months ago, after facing the nearly unstoppable alter-universe alien might of Ulysses, Superman uncovered a new ability that allowed him to flare up the solar energy that is stored in his cells — the same energy he utilizes to power up his Kryptonian cells and makes him a “superman”. Whenever he uses this new power, Clark Kent becomes powerless for up to 24 hours as his body “recharges” and rendering him vulnerable.

The alternate cover to Action Comics #52 pays homage to the arrival of Superman in “The New 52”.

In this state Superman becomes as human as the rest of us, and unfortunately using this new ability has come with some consequence that has left him open to a type of blood poisoning that is affecting him down to the DNA level. Superman and Batman were able to trace some of his failing health to China and some experiments that have been performed by the dreaded Dr. Omen.

Now the three heroes are giving perilous chase to the energy entity that has escaped capture by A.R.G.U.S. and is claiming to be Superman. Batman traces the creatures energy to the West Coast and there they find the irradiated imposter, who has attacked the home of “Clark White” otherwise known as the Pre-New 52 Superman a survivor of the recent “Convergence” event that has been hiding with his Super-Family here on Earth!

So now the trinity have their hands full facing the energized “Superman” imposter and ultimately discovering the mystery behind the other Superman, while deciding the fate of Superman himself! “The Final Days of Superman” storyline have been all leading up to the upcoming publishing-wide event being billed as “DC Universe: Rebirth” and DC Comics Chief Creative Office Geoff Johns continues to insist that it is not a new “reboot”.

The entire line of DC Comics publications were made more contemporary and redesigned after the 2011 “reboot” of the imprint that was marketed as “The New 52”. All the heroes in the DC Comics Universe were reintroduced and most were reimagined to more accurately take to the readership’s more modernized sensibilities. The launch occurred after the events of “FlashPoint” and launched with the flagship title of Justice League #1.

As most of the DC Comics publications begin to hit the respective issues #52 this month, next month most will be rebranded as “Rebirth” One-Shots before returning and renumbered with all-new storylines and some minor cosmetic changes. Batman has already been “rebirth” so to speak. Writer Scott Snyder who has been writing the Dark Knight for most of his “New 52” run, will be handing the title to Tom King.

They are promising that the passing of the baton will usher in and “unleash a new Bat-era” for the beloved character. Snyder won’t be vacating Gotham City all too quickly as he’ll be at the helm of the new title All-Star Batman which will have him teaming up with the legendary John Romita Jr. the same JRJ who has been onboard since joining forces with Geoff Johns on Superman recently.

As for the Man of Steel, “Final Days” scribe Peter J. Tomasi has been promising that the end result of Superman’s fate will have major repercussions for the character, in fact when the hero returns after the “Rebirth” it’s all possible that he will be replaced by his “pre-52” counterpart who is married to Lois and the two have a son, Jonathan who will be taking up the tradition and share in some super heroics of his own.

Lois Lane will also be gaining some abilities of her own and launching the new title Superwoman written by comics great Phil Jimenez who will also be drawing the title. Left with the task of protecting the planet Supergirl will be moving to National City and take up a job at the DEO (Department of Extranormal Operations). The title will be written by Steve Orlando who just ending a brilliantly stunning run on Midnighter.

So what does all this really mean for Superman? Is it true that these are indeed perhaps the final days of the character which still remains one of the tentpole heroes for the publishing giant? Whatever happens you can expect that it will be unique indeed, after all it isn’t everyday that a Superman dies…only to be reborn from the ashes.

The Super Bowl Pulls No Punches

Heading into the midst of a golden Super Bowl weekend, the studios hard hit with their own brand of “super” indeed.

12486036_457812651085987_6494375070813564566_o.jpg
The Man of Steel faces off against the Dark Knight in a confrontation so epic it’s going to spell “doomsday” for one of them and bring in the dawn for a league of justice.

It may only be the beginning of the year, but with Super Bowl Sunday captivating more than 100 million television viewers world wide, the studios have upped the ante with longer teases and full-on trailers for their upcoming summer movie slate — and then some! Warner Brothers and Fox studios were leading the pack running cleverly marketed ads that promoted the upcoming Marvel property Deadpool but with the most anticipated game of the year on everyone’s mind, it was a no-brainer that the summer’s big screen brawl took some honors.

Gotham City and her sister city Metropolis were both at the center of airline tourism ads to position Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) encouraged visitor come to Gotham and enjoy the nightlife as well as visit the opera, and Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) suggests that the newly rebuilt Metropolis has even more to offer. Either way it’s fans who end winning as the messaging is clear…the dawn is near!

Another trailer that garnered just as much attention and is also pitting two of its titular tentpole stars against one another is the trailer to Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War the sequel to Winter Soldier takes much of its cue from the events in Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron — that film’s most pivotal scene came from a quiet moment between Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.) as the two friends and warriors discuss their mission and the consequences of their heroics.

Whose side are you going to be one when Civil War breaks out this summer on the big screen?

In the upcoming Civil War Cap finds himself choosing sides when a close friend and ally becomes a target and lines are drawn in the sand. Interesting that two of the big blockbusters and major superhero franchise films are pitting its big guns against one another! Undoubtedly one day Captain America versus Batman will draw just as much attention. Other Avengers making Super Bowl appearances included the diminutive Ant-Man stealing a Coke from the incredible Hulk.

Also making the grade for raising the stakes is the next installment from Michael Bay’s revisiting of his 80’s toy box as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows is introduced and reveals some fan favorites that just didn’t make it into the first film. Bay has practically thrown everything but the kitchen sink into this sequel including some classic sidekicks and villains. Fans can expect Casey Jones (Stephen Amell) and the evil Krang to pop in!

One thing is for certain with millions tuning in, the super franchises are ready to make plays of their own to pull us in and keep us engaged this season at a theater near you!

Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice opens in March with Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War premiering in May.

Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” Trailer is No Holds Barred!

It’s WAR! Captain America takes on Iron Man in the next episode in Marvel Films cinematic universe…and he’s bringing along some friends.

It’s hard to imagine discord in the Marvel Comics universe but one of the publishing giant’s greatest moments came with the crossover event “Civil War” which pitted Avengers and allies; on one side the forces of Captain America facing the corporate might of the United States government and Iron Man.

Although both had the best of intentions, Cap and Tony found themselves at odds over the government implementing a mandate that any and all super-powered individuals be registered with the government, and by order serve when called upon. Captain America believed this action to be an infringement on the individuals civil rights, while Iron Man was convinced it was every hero’s social responsibility.

Civil_War_7.jpg
It’s war! Avenger vs. Avenger…”Civil War” is about to get the big screen treatment next summer.

The epic saga played out over several months in 2006 and into 2007 under the watchful creative arc of writer Mark Millar. The series also had repercussions throughout the Marvel Universe, and played out in practically every one of its monthly publications — especially profound was the impact on Spider-Man as Peter Parker found himself revealing his secret identity publicly at Iron Man’s insistence, but when a battle with Captain America’s resistance force ends in a major casualty, Parker switches sides.

The storyline resulted in several “Avengers Initiatives” afterwards, until Captain America finally resurfaces to oppose a rogue nation.

Iron Man and Captain America ultimately must but their differences aside when they discover the truth in their folly. As Avenger battled Avenger, the villainous Norman Osborn inserted himself into world affairs and ultimately places every major super villain in a position of power!

This confrontation eventually plays out, and the Marvel Universe has never been the same, and now the battle will play out on the big screen when the Captain America: Civil War the third in the series of solo films featuring the “First Avenger”, but how will fans react when Cap faces off against his fellow Avenger Tony Stark. If the just released trailer is any indications…sparks will fly!
